Researchers synthesized a linear lanthanide (Ln) trimer using a flexible calixarene analogue ligand. This study demonstrates a novel approach to constructing complex lanthanide coordination compounds.
Area of Science:
- Coordination Chemistry
- Lanthanide Chemistry
- Supramolecular Chemistry
Background:
- Calixarenes are well-established macrocyclic compounds with diverse applications.
- Lanthanide complexes are of interest due to their unique magnetic and luminescent properties.
- Developing new synthetic strategies for lanthanide clusters remains a challenge.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize a novel linear trinuclear lanthanide (Ln3) complex.
- To investigate the utility of a flexible bis(phenol)methane ligand in constructing lanthanide assemblies.
- To explore the structural characteristics of the resulting Ln3 trimer.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of the bis(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl-phenyl)methane ligand.
- Self-assembly of the ligand with lanthanide ions (Ln3+) to form the trimer.
- Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis to determine the structure.
Main Results:
- An unusual linear [Ln3] trimer was successfully constructed.
- The flexible ligand adopted a conformation suitable for bridging three lanthanide ions.
- The crystal structure revealed a specific coordination environment around each lanthanide ion.
Conclusions:
- The flexible bis(phenol)methane ligand is effective for building linear lanthanide arrays.
- This work provides a new method for accessing discrete lanthanide trimers.
- The findings contribute to the understanding of lanthanide coordination chemistry and supramolecular assembly.

Consider the bromination of cyclopentene. Molecular bromine is polarized in the proximity of the π electrons of cyclopentene. An electrophilic bromine atom adds across the double bond, forming a cyclic bromonium ion intermediate.
