This study introduces a novel colorimetric sensor that overcomes limitations of traditional solvatochromic sensors. The new sensor enables easy identification of specific solvents by changing color only when a protective layer is disrupted.
Area of Science:
- Chemical Sensing
- Molecular Design
- Supramolecular Chemistry
Background:
- Conventional solvatochromic sensors exhibit broad spectral overlaps, hindering precise solvent differentiation.
- Distinguishing between solvents of similar polarity using existing colorimetric methods is challenging.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a novel colorimetric and fluorescence turn-on sensor for facile and specific solvent identification.
- To overcome the limitations of broad spectral overlaps in conventional solvatochromic systems.
Main Methods:
- Design of a tailor-made solvatochromic sensor with a protective layer.
- Utilizing solvent-specific disruption of the protective layer to trigger a colorimetric response.
- Demonstration of sensor versatility in differentiating specific solvents and sequence-selective sensing.
Main Results:
- The developed sensor exhibits a specific colorimetric transition upon disruption of its protective layer by a target solvent.
- Successfully differentiated between chloroform and dichloromethane using colorimetry.
- Constructed a solvatochromic molecular AND logic gate, showcasing advanced functionality.
Conclusions:
- The novel sensor strategy enables facile and specific solvent identification, overcoming previous limitations.
- The approach demonstrates versatility for differentiating similar solvents and enabling logic gate operations.
- This work opens new avenues for developing advanced solvatochromic sensors.
