The Auditory Ossicles

The auditory ossicles of the middle ear transmit sounds from the air as vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlea. The auditory ossicles consist of two malleus (hammer) bones, two incus (anvil) bones, and two stapes (stirrups), one on each side. These bones develop during the fetal stage and are the ones to ossify first. They are fully mature at birth and do not grow afterward.

Endaural Endoscopic Atticoantrotomy (Retrograde Mastoidectomy) using a Constant Suction Bone-drilling Technique

  • Audiometric evaluation performed pre-operatively and 6 months post-surgery.

    • Eighteen surgeries were performed on 13 pediatric patients (average age 9 years).
    • Mean air-bone gap (ABG) improved from 40.8 dB to 20.9 dB (p < 0.0001).
    • Mean air conduction PTA thresholds improved from 49.9 dB to 30.0 dB (p < 0.0001), with 17 of 18 ears showing improvement.
