This study found no genetic link between specific opioid system genes (OPRM1, POMC, OPRK1, PDYN) and alcoholism in the Croatian population. The analyzed gene variations did not differ between alcohol-dependent individuals and controls.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Genetics
- Psychiatry
Background:
- Opioid system genes are implicated in dependence pathways, making them candidates for alcoholism research.
- Genetic variations in opioid receptors and their ligand precursors may influence alcohol dependence susceptibility.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between polymorphisms in opioid system genes (OPRM1, POMC, OPRK1, PDYN) and alcoholism.
- To analyze these associations in a Croatian male population, including subgroups based on Cloninger's criteria.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study was conducted with 354 male alcohol-dependent subjects and 357 male controls from Croatia.
- Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the OPRM1, POMC, OPRK1, and PDYN genes were analyzed for allele and genotype frequencies.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in allele or genotype frequencies were found for the studied polymorphisms between alcohol-dependent individuals and controls.
- Subgroup analysis based on Cloninger's criteria (type-1 and type-2 alcoholism) also revealed no associations.
Conclusions:
- The selected polymorphisms in OPRM1, POMC, OPRK1, and PDYN genes are not associated with alcoholism in the Croatian male population.
- These findings suggest that the investigated genetic variations within the opioid system do not play a significant role in alcohol dependence in this cohort.
