Smokers with greater knowledge of smoking's health risks showed increased motivation to quit. This finding highlights the importance of health education in smoking cessation efforts among Lebanese smokers.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Behavioral Science
- Medical Research
Background:
- Smoking remains a significant global health issue.
- Understanding factors influencing smoking cessation is crucial for public health interventions.
- Knowledge of health consequences may impact an individual's motivation to quit smoking.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the relationship between knowledge of smoking-related health problems and motivation to quit among Lebanese smokers.
- To compare knowledge and motivation levels between smokers with and without smoking-related health issues.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study was conducted with two groups of Lebanese smokers.
- Group 1: Hospitalized patients (n=42) for cardiologic or respiratory issues.
- Group 2: Smokers (n=69) without smoking-related health problems. Knowledge and motivation were assessed.
Main Results:
- A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between the Richmond test score (measuring motivation to quit) and the level of knowledge about smoking-related health problems (r = .302; p = .0013).
- This suggests that higher awareness of health risks is associated with greater motivation to quit smoking.
Conclusions:
- Increased knowledge of smoking-related health problems is positively correlated with motivation to quit among Lebanese smokers.
- Health education initiatives emphasizing the risks of smoking may enhance cessation motivation.
- Further research could explore this relationship in diverse populations and settings.
