Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Amyloidosis involves abnormal protein deposits in organs, often systemic but can be localized.
  • Breast amyloidosis is an uncommon manifestation of this rare disease.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old woman presented with suspicious microcalcifications on mammography.
  • Mammography revealed multiple, linearly distributed, irregular, rod-like calcifications in the left subareolar region.
  • No associated masses were detected on the mammogram.

Findings:

  • The case demonstrates primary localized breast amyloidosis.
  • Mammographic findings included suspicious microcalcifications without discernible masses.
  • Pathological confirmation was achieved post-surgical excision under mammo-guided needle localization.

Implications:

  • Suspicious microcalcifications on mammography can be indicative of breast amyloidosis.
  • Early detection and diagnosis are crucial for managing rare breast conditions.
  • This case expands understanding of the varied mammographic presentations of breast amyloidosis.
