MicroRNAs

MicroRNA (miRNA) are short, regulatory RNA transcribed from introns (non-coding regions of a gene) or intergenic regions (stretches of DNA present between genes). Several processing steps are required to form biologically active, mature miRNA. The initial transcript, called primary miRNA (pri-mRNA), base-pairs with itself, forming a stem-loop structure. Within the nucleus, an endonuclease enzyme, called Drosha, shortens the stem-loop structure into hairpin-shaped pre-miRNA. After the pre-miRNA...

Area of Science:

  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics
  • Oncology

Background:

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs regulating gene expression post-transcriptionally.
  • They are involved in crucial biological processes like cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.
  • Dysregulation of miRNAs is implicated in cancer development, acting as tumor suppressors or oncogenes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of specific microRNAs in breast cancer.
  • To analyze miRNA expression profiles in breast cancer tissues.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) using stem-loop reverse transcriptase (RT) primers.
  • TaqMan® PCR assays.
  • MicroRNA (miRNA) microarray analysis.

Main Results:

  • Initial findings from miRNA analyses of breast cancer tissues were presented.
  • Specific miRNA expression patterns were identified in breast cancer samples.

Conclusions:

  • MicroRNAs are significantly associated with breast cancer.
  • These findings contribute to understanding miRNA involvement in carcinogenesis.
