Background:

Findings:

  • A significant negative association (P = 0.01) exists between cardiovascular and costovertebral defects, unless multiple anomalies are present.
  • Observed anomaly combinations suggest specific developmental field defects influenced by spatial and temporal factors during foregut development.
  • Aberrant bronchi should be considered in infants with congenital heart defects or multiple anomalies (e.g., VACTERL association) presenting with unexplained respiratory symptoms.

Implications:

  • These findings highlight the clinical and embryological importance of recognizing patterns in congenital anomalies.
  • Clinicians should consider aberrant bronchi in infants with cardiac defects and respiratory issues.
  • Surgeons operating on aberrant bronchi must be aware of the high incidence of associated vascular abnormalities.
