Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Oxygen Therapy for Respiratory Failure01:16

Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Oxygen Therapy for Respiratory Failure

Oxygen therapy has emerged as a significant tool in enhancing the quality of life for patients suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). While this therapy has principally been studied on patients with significant hypoxemia, this therapeutic approach helps prevent potential organ damage and can be administered in the comfort of one's home.
Oxygen therapy is vital in increasing and maintaining blood oxygen levels in PAH patients. As a result, it aids in reducing fatigue, improving...

Summary

Preconditioning with 60% oxygen before cisplatin treatment may help prevent kidney damage. While initial renal function effects were transiently adverse, improvements were observed after 30 days in patients with solid tumors.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Nephrology
  • Critical Care Medicine

Background:

  • Cisplatin is a vital chemotherapy agent but causes significant nephrotoxicity, limiting its use.
  • Reducing cisplatin-induced kidney damage is crucial for effective cancer treatment.
  • Normobaric hyperoxia is explored as a potential protective intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if normobaric hyperoxia preconditioning can prevent cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in solid tumor patients.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study included 80 adult solid tumor patients receiving cisplatin.
  • 43 patients received 60% oxygen preconditioning (2 hours at 48, 24, 6 hours before cisplatin).
  • 37 patients served as a control group receiving only cisplatin. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was monitored.

Main Results:

  • Patients receiving oxygen preconditioning showed mild, statistically significant improvement in eGFR (p=0.048) and reduced serum creatinine after 30 days.
  • The intervention demonstrated a mild positive impact on renal function markers post-cisplatin therapy.

Conclusions:

  • Normobaric hyperoxia preconditioning has a transient adverse effect on renal function initially.
  • However, this intervention shows potential in improving renal function after 30 days, suggesting a role in preventing cisplatin nephrotoxicity.
