Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Strategies of Self-Presentation III: Self-Monitoring

Self-monitoring is a central construct in understanding individual differences in self-presentation strategies across social contexts. It refers to how individuals observe, regulate, and control their expressive behavior and self-presentation following situational cues. Self-monitoring reflects a person's sensitivity to social appropriateness and willingness to adapt behavior to fit varying interpersonal demands.High vs. Low Self-Monitoring IndividualsIndividuals high in self-monitoring are...
Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.
Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Mindfulness Research

Background:

  • Existing mindfulness measures may not fully capture traditional Buddhist and contemporary psychological science models.
  • A need exists for a validated scale assessing state mindfulness as a dynamic mental behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the State Mindfulness Scale (SMS).
  • To assess state mindfulness of bodily sensations and mental events.
  • To evaluate the SMS's psychometric properties and clinical utility.

Main Methods:

  • Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to establish the SMS structure.
  • Cross-sectional studies assessed convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity.
  • A randomized controlled trial evaluated the SMS's sensitivity to change and predictive validity.

Main Results:

  • Factor analyses supported a two-factor structure for state mindfulness (bodily and mental).
  • The SMS demonstrated good convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity.
  • The SMS showed stability, construct validity, and sensitivity to change in an intervention study.

Conclusions:

  • The State Mindfulness Scale (SMS) is a reliable and valid measure of state mindfulness.
  • The SMS can contribute to understanding mindfulness as a mental behavior and its mechanisms.
  • The SMS has potential applications in clinical evaluation and biopsychobehavioral research.
