Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra. Symptoms...

Urinary Tract Calculi II: Pathophysiology and Clinical Manifestations

Renal calculi, commonly termed kidney stones, are crystalline solid masses that form in the kidneys but can occur at any point within the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The pathophysiology of renal stones involves several key factors: supersaturation of the urine with stone-forming constituents, changes in urine pH, a decrease in urine volume, and the presence of substances that promote or inhibit stone formation.Supersaturation of Urine: This is the...

Summary

This study found that Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostatic Adenocarcinoma are common in men aged 60-70. Early detection of prostate cancer is crucial due to its rising frequency.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • The prostate gland, a walnut-sized organ surrounding the urethra, is susceptible to diseases like prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate cancer.
  • Understanding the spectrum of prostatic lesions and their correlation with patient symptoms is essential for diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the spectrum of prostatic lesions encountered in patients.
  • To correlate these prostatic lesions with the presenting complaints of the patients.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2010 to December 2012 in the Pathology Department of Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan.
  • Prostatic specimens were obtained via transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), simple prostatectomy, and radical prostatectomy.
  • Data on patient demographics, clinical diagnosis, and symptoms were collected and analyzed using SPSS 19.

Main Results:

  • A total of 48 prostatic specimens were analyzed, with a mean patient age of 65.7 ± 7.6 years.
  • The most common presenting complaints were urinary retention (47.9%) and dribbling (25%).
  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) was diagnosed in 42 patients, while 6 patients had Prostatic Adenocarcinoma. Both conditions were most prevalent in the 60-70 age group.

Conclusions:

  • The incidence of prostate cancer is increasing, necessitating early detection strategies.
  • Introduction of screening protocols and awareness programs is recommended.
  • Future screening programs should consider androgen levels and molecular pathogenesis for enhanced efficacy.
