Efficacy of a Carrageenan gel Against Transmission of Cervical HPV (CATCH): interim analysis of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2B trial.

Clinical microbiology and infection : the official publication of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases·2018

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Gynecologic Pathology

Background:

  • Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.
  • Perineal endometriosis is an extremely rare manifestation, often associated with prior surgical trauma.

Observation:

  • A 32-year-old woman presented with primary infertility.
  • Unexpectedly, examination revealed endometriosis in the perineal region.

Findings:

  • The absence of any history of perineal trauma challenges typical etiologies.
  • The findings suggest a potential venous or lymphatic dissemination pathway for endometrial tissue.

Implications:

  • This case expands the understanding of endometriosis spread.
  • It highlights the need to consider uncommon routes of metastasis in gynecologic conditions.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research into non-surgical routes of perineal endometriosis is warranted.
