Summary

This case study highlights a rare conjunctival myxoid liposarcoma, round cell subtype, demonstrating aggressive behavior with multiple recurrences and metastasis over seven years. Early detection and tailored treatment are crucial for managing this challenging ocular tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Conjunctival liposarcomas are rare orbital tumors.
  • Myxoid liposarcoma, round cell subtype, presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 61-year-old female presented with a conjunctival tumor, diagnosed as myxoid liposarcoma, round cell subtype.
  • The tumor exhibited rapid growth, multiple local recurrences, and eventual pulmonary metastasis over a seven-year period.
  • Histopathology confirmed lipoblasts and small round cells with positive CD34, S100, and vimentin markers.

Findings:

  • The conjunctival liposarcoma showed a high propensity for local recurrence, necessitating repeated surgical interventions including exenteration.
  • The aggressive nature of the round cell subtype was evidenced by rapid tumor evolution and distant metastasis.

Anterior High-Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography in the Diagnosis and Therapeutic Monitoring of Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia

  • Immunohistochemistry was vital in confirming the diagnosis and characterizing the tumor subtype.
  • Implications:

    • Conjunctival myxoid liposarcoma, particularly the round cell subtype, requires vigilant monitoring due to its aggressive behavior and high recurrence rate.
    • Changes in recurrence speed and volume may indicate histopathological evolution, impacting prognosis and treatment strategies.
    • This case underscores the importance of comprehensive histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation for accurate diagnosis and management of rare conjunctival tumors.
