Vibrating Concrete01:19

Vibrating Concrete

Mechanical vibrators are instrumental in compacting newly poured concrete within formwork and around reinforcements. This process is essential to eliminate trapped air pockets and establish a dense concrete mass. One widely used method is vibrating by internal vibrators, often referred to as a poker vibrator or immersion vibrator. It is rapidly inserted through the full depth of the freshly laid concrete and slightly extends into the layer below it (which remains in a plastic state). Consistent...
Travelling Waves01:04

Travelling Waves

A wave is a disturbance that propagates from its source, repeating itself periodically, and is typically associated with simple harmonic motion. Mechanical waves are governed by Newton's laws and require a medium to travel. A medium is a substance in which a mechanical wave propagates, and the medium produces an elastic restoring force when it is deformed.
Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are some examples of mechanical waves. For water waves, the wave propagation medium is water;...
Rab Cascades01:25

Rab Cascades

Rab GTPases act in a regulated cascade during membrane fusion, helping the lipid bilayers mix. The Rab family of proteins are active when bound to GTP, and inactive when bound to GDP. Hence, they act as guanine nucleotide-dependent molecular switches. Rab-GTP recognizes and binds to long or short-range tethering proteins to capture the target vesicle. These tethers coordinate with SNAREs on the vesicle and the target membrane to assemble the trans SNARE complex that locks the mixing bilayers.
Torsional Pendulum01:09

Torsional Pendulum

A torsional pendulum involves the oscillation of a rigid body in which the restoring force is provided by the torsion in the string from which the rigid body is suspended. Ideally, the string should be massless; practically, its mass is much smaller than the rigid body's mass and is neglected.
As long as the rigid body's angular displacement is small, its oscillation can be modeled as a linear angular oscillation. The amplitude of the oscillation is an angle. The role of mass is played by the...
Adjusting a Traverse01:12

Adjusting a Traverse

In the site survey of a four-sided traverse, internal angles are essential to ensure geometric accuracy. The survey revealed that the sum of the measured internal angles was 359 degrees and 48 minutes, which is 12 minutes less than the expected 360 degrees. This discrepancy signals an error likely arising from measurement inaccuracies during the fieldwork. To rectify this error, the adjustment process involved distributing the 12-minute shortfall equally across the four internal angles. By...
Torque01:10

Torque

Torque is an important quantity for describing the dynamics of a rotating rigid body. We see the application of torque in many ways in the world, such as when pressing the accelerator in a car, which causes the engine to apply additional torque on the drivetrain. Here, we define torque and provide a framework to create an equation to calculate torque for a rigid body with fixed-axis rotation.
Torque can be considered as the rotational counterpart to force. Since forces change the translational...

Summary

Essential Tremor (ET) involves abnormal brain signal synchronization. Deep brain stimulation revealed distinct neural pathways for postural and intention tremor in ET patients.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Neurology
  • Motor Control

Background:

  • Essential Tremor (ET) is the most common tremor disorder, characterized by aberrant synchronization in the human motor system.
  • Significant variation exists within ET, with differing presentations of postural and intention tremor.
  • Understanding the neural substrates underlying different tremor types is crucial for effective treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the distinct neural substrates responsible for postural and intention tremor in Essential Tremor.
  • To determine the effects of deep brain stimulation on tremor circuits in ET patients.

Main Methods:

  • Low-frequency deep brain stimulation was applied within the thalamus of ET patients.
  • The study analyzed the effects of stimulation on postural and intention tremor.

  • Results were correlated with existing literature on tremor pathophysiology.
  • Main Results:

    • Low-frequency deep brain stimulation exacerbated intention tremor, but not postural tremor.
    • The effect was localized to the ventrolateral thalamus, implicating cerebello-thalamic pathways.
    • Findings suggest distinct neural substrates for postural and intention tremor in ET.

    Conclusions:

    • Distinct neural substrates, potentially overlapping, underlie postural and intention tremor in ET.
    • Cerebello-thalamic pathways are implicated in intention tremor.
    • Tremor may arise from selective dysregulation within a broader tremorgenic network.
