Background:

Aging can decrease functional ability, impacting older workers' productivity.
Understanding age-related changes in work capacity is crucial for workforce management.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare sociodemographics, health, and physical functioning between young and old workers.
To examine correlations between physical functioning and the Work Ability Index (WAI).

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional study of employees in higher education and metallurgy.
Matched older (≥50 years) and younger (<50 years) workers by gender and occupation.
Evaluations included questionnaires, WAI, and physical functional tests.

Main Results:

Older workers reported more diseases and medication use.
No significant difference in WAI or most physical functions (walking, strength) between age groups.
Older workers performed worse on right-leg support tests; WAI correlated with sit-to-stand in older females.

Conclusions:

General health conditions in older workers did not negatively affect Work Ability Index scores.
Most physical functional capacities remained comparable between younger and older workers, despite health differences.
