Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Hypertension linked to renin-secreting tumors was first documented in 1967.
  • Juxtaglomerular cell tumors were identified as a cause of hyperreninemic hypertension.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the concept of renin-secreting tumors and their impact on hypertension.
  • To introduce and advocate for the term "primary reninism".

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of reported cases of renin-secreting tumors.
  • Analysis of clinical presentation and outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Renin-secreting tumors, both renal and nonrenal, can lead to surgically curable hypertension.
  • The syndrome is associated with elevated renin levels.

Conclusions:

  • Primary reninism is a proposed term for hypertension caused by renin-secreting tumors.
  • This condition is treatable through surgical intervention for the underlying tumor.
