Evaluation of Stem Cell Therapies in a Bilateral Patellar Tendon Injury Model in Rats

  • Patients presented with significant extensor lag and functional limitations (average IKDC score 46.8).
  • Follow-up averaged over three years.
  • Main Results:

    • All patients achieved stable knees postoperatively with no extension lag and good range of motion (mean flexion 125°).
    • Significant improvement in quadriceps strength and functional scores (average IKDC 86.8, Lysholm 92.4, Kujala 94.5).
    • Excellent outcomes reported in five patients, good outcomes in two.

    Conclusions:

    • Hamstring tendon autograft reconstruction is effective for neglected patellar tendon injuries, providing stability and excellent functional recovery.
    • This technique offers a cost-effective, simple, and anatomical solution compared to methods requiring allografts or implants.
    • The procedure demonstrates a viable alternative for managing chronic patellar tendon defects.
