Summary

This study evaluated cementless hip resurfacing, finding no revisions or loosening in short-term follow-up. Elevated chromium and cobalt levels were observed, suggesting further investigation for future hip resurfacing device generations.

Background:

  • Current hip arthroplasty standards utilize metal-on-metal bearings with cemented femoral components and cementless acetabular fixation.

  • Mean follow-up was 13.1 months.
  • Main Results:

    • No revisions were performed during the observed follow-up period.
    • No radiological signs of loosening or significant femoral neck narrowing were detected.
    • Whole blood chromium and cobalt levels increased, with chromium rising from 0.53 μg/l to 1.7 μg/l and cobalt from 0.54 μg/l to 1.98 μg/l.

    Conclusions:

    • Cementless "fit and fill" femoral-side fixation shows promise for future hip resurfacing device generations.
    • The design and fixation method appear to be critical factors for improved outcomes in cementless hip resurfacing.
