Evolution of Microbial Genome01:08

Evolution of Microbial Genome

Microbial genome evolution is a highly dynamic process shaped by continual gene gain and loss across species and strains. This genomic flexibility allows microorganisms to adapt rapidly to environmental pressures and interactions with other organisms. Central to understanding this diversity is the distinction between the core and pan genomes. The core genome comprises the genes shared by all sampled strains of a species, representing essential functions needed for fundamental cellular processes.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Microbiology
  • Genomics
  • Bovine Diseases

Background:

  • Pasteurella multocida serogroup A is frequently identified in both healthy calves and those with pneumonia.
  • This bacterium plays a significant role in bovine respiratory disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the draft genome sequence of a specific virulent Pasteurella multocida strain (671/90).
  • To provide genomic data for a strain previously used in experimental calf and mouse infections.

Main Methods:

  • Whole-genome sequencing of Pasteurella multocida strain 671/90.
  • Bioinformatic analysis of the resulting draft genome sequence.

Main Results:

  • The draft genome sequence of the virulent Pasteurella multocida strain 671/90 has been successfully generated.
  • This sequence data offers a valuable resource for understanding the genetic basis of virulence.

Conclusions:

  • The availability of this genome sequence facilitates further research into Pasteurella multocida pathogenesis.
  • Understanding the genomics of virulent strains can aid in developing strategies to control bovine pneumonia.
