  • The European Society for Vascular Surgery tasked the European Vascular Surgeons in Training (EVST) to assess current vascular surgery (VS) training and certification across Europe.
  • This review addresses the evolving landscape of VS education and professional standards.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comprehensively review and document the current status and developments in vascular surgery training and certification throughout Europe.
  • To identify trends and variations in training models and curriculum updates.

Main Methods:

  • An email-based survey was distributed to EVST representatives in 33 European countries.
  • Data were collected on the structure of VS training (monospecialty, subspecialty, no specialty) and national curriculum revisions.
  • Responses were received from 31 countries, with two reporting dual training models.

Main Results:

  • Monospecialty VS training is the predominant model in 18 countries, offering significantly longer training durations (3.8 years) compared to subspecialty (2.9 years) or no specialty (1 year) models.
  • 83% of countries with independent certification have recently updated curricula, compared to 56% for subspecialty and 17% for no specialty models.
  • Endovascular logbooks are mandatory in 78% of certified programs, with quality control in 62% and heterogeneous training centers in 46%.

Conclusions:

  • This survey provides the most current detailed overview of European vascular surgery training profiles.
  • Significant diversity exists in vascular training across Europe, highlighting varied approaches to education and certification.
