Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) is expressed at lower levels in gliomas and is linked to tumor behavior. BMP4 expression predicts distant metastasis and patient prognosis in glioma.
Area of Science:
- Neuro-oncology
- Molecular biology
- Cancer research
Background:
- The expression of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) in gliomas remains unclear.
- Understanding BMP4's role is crucial for glioma management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between BMP4 expression and glioma's biological behavior.
- To assess BMP4 as a prognostic factor in glioma patients.
Main Methods:
- Evaluated BMP4 expression (mRNA and protein) in 630 glioma patients using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.
- Analyzed correlations between BMP4 expression, clinicopathological parameters, and prognosis.
Main Results:
- BMP4 expression was significantly lower in glioma tissues compared to paracancer tissues.
- BMP4 expression correlated with extent of resection, Ki-67, and WHO grade.
- BMP4 expression predicted distant metastasis and was an independent prognostic factor.
Conclusions:
- BMP4 is differentially expressed in gliomas and influences tumor behavior.
- BMP4 expression is a strong predictor of distant metastasis and postoperative prognosis in glioma.
