A new combination of blood tests and FibroScan, called E-FibroMeter, significantly improves non-invasive liver fibrosis staging accuracy. This enhanced method offers better precision and reliability for diagnosing liver fibrosis and predicting cirrhosis.
Area of Science:
- Hepatology
- Medical Diagnostics
- Biomarker Discovery
Background:
- Non-invasive fibrosis staging is crucial for managing chronic liver diseases.
- Previous methods like FibroMeter and FibroScan have limitations in accuracy and precision.
- There is a need for improved diagnostic tools to accurately stage liver fibrosis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To enhance non-invasive liver fibrosis staging accuracy by combining multiple diagnostic tests.
- To develop a more precise fibrosis classification system.
- To improve the reliability and personalized accuracy of fibrosis staging.
Main Methods:
- A derivation population of 729 patients with chronic hepatitis C underwent liver biopsy, six blood tests, and FibroScan.
- Validation was performed on an additional 1584 patients.
- A novel combination, 'E-FibroMeter', integrating FibroMeter markers and FibroScan results was developed.
Main Results:
- E-FibroMeter achieved 91.7% classification accuracy, outperforming FibroMeter (84.1%) and FibroScan (88.2%).
- Accuracy for detecting absence of fibrosis (F0) increased from 16.0% (FibroScan) to 75.0% (E-FibroMeter).
- Cirrhosis sensitivity improved to 92.7% with E-FibroMeter, compared to 83.3% with FibroScan, and reliability increased to 94.2%.
Conclusions:
- The E-FibroMeter combination significantly improves liver fibrosis staging accuracy, precision, and reliability.
- This novel approach enhances the detection of fibrosis absence and improves cirrhosis prediction.
- E-FibroMeter offers a more accurate and dependable non-invasive tool for liver fibrosis assessment.
