Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Peripheral nerve injuries often require surgical repair to restore function.
  • Autografts are the current gold standard but have limitations like donor site morbidity and limited availability.
  • Novel biomaterials are being explored to improve nerve regeneration outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of eggshell membrane (ESM) as a conduit for peripheral nerve regeneration.
  • To compare the functional recovery of sciatic nerve defects repaired with ESM conduits versus autografts in a rat model.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty rats were randomized into three groups: ESM conduit, autograft, and sham surgery.
  • A 10-mm segment of the sciatic nerve was excised.
  • Nerve regeneration was assessed using the sciatic functional index (SFI) and electrophysiology (nerve conduction velocity - NCV).

Main Results:

  • The ESM conduit group showed significantly improved SFI compared to the autograft group at days 49 and 60 post-operation (P<0.05).
  • While the ESM group exhibited higher NCV on day 90, the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05).

Conclusions:

  • ESM conduits effectively promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery in a rat sciatic nerve injury model.
  • ESM represents a promising, potentially advantageous alternative to autografts for peripheral nerve repair.
