Human Genetics01:28

Human Genetics

2.0K
Human genetics provides a profound framework for understanding the interplay between genetic predispositions and human psychology. At the heart of this discipline lies the study of how genes influence physical traits, behaviors, and susceptibility to diseases. Each person carries a unique genetic code that subtly or significantly shapes their psychological and behavioral landscape.
The complex relationship between genetics and psychology is observable through common biological components such...

Behavioral Genetics and Its Designs01:23

Behavioral Genetics and Its Designs

1.5K
Behavior genetics explores how genetic inheritance influences human behavior. It focuses on how genes, passed from parents to offspring, contribute to the development of behavioral traits and tendencies. This branch of genetics seeks to understand the complex interplay between inherited genetic factors and environmental influences in shaping our behaviors.
The primary methodologies used in behavior genetics include family studies, twin studies, and adoption studies, each providing unique...

Genetic Drift03:33

Genetic Drift

35.4K
Natural selection—probably the most well-known evolutionary mechanism—increases the prevalence of traits that enhance survival and reproduction. However, evolution does not merely propagate favorable traits, nor does it always benefit populations.

Incomplete Dominance01:43

Incomplete Dominance

19.2K
Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism.

Genetic Variation01:25

Genetic Variation

1.7K
Genetic variation is the diversity in DNA sequences found among individuals of the same species. This diversity is crucial for a species' survival because it helps organisms adapt to environmental changes. Genetic variation begins with fertilization, where an egg and sperm cell merge. Each of these cells carries 23 chromosomes, up to 46 in the fertilized egg. Chromosomes are long DNA strands that contain genes, the basic units of heredity.
Genes exist in different versions called alleles,...

Genetic Screens02:46

Genetic Screens

4.6K
Genetic screens are tools used to identify genes and mutations responsible for phenotypes of interest. Genetic screens help identify individuals or a group of people at risk of developing  genetic diseases and help them with early intervention, targeted therapy, and reproductive options.
Forward genetic screens
Forward or “classical” genetic screens involve creating random mutations in an organism’s DNA using radiation, mutagens, or insertion of additional bases, which...

Summary

WHIM syndrome, a rare immunodeficiency, stems from CXCR4 gene mutations. Plerixafor, a CXCR4 antagonist, shows promise as a novel therapy for this condition.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Genetics
  • Hematology

Background:

  • WHIM syndrome is a rare primary immunodeficiency characterized by Warts, Hypogammaglobulinaemia, Infections, and Myelokathexis.
  • Myelokathexis involves neutrophil retention in the bone marrow.
  • Translational research identified heterozygous mutations in the CXCR4 gene as the cause.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical manifestations, pathophysiology, and diagnosis of WHIM syndrome.
  • To explore potential therapies for WHIM syndrome, particularly Plerixafor.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on WHIM syndrome.
  • Analysis of the role of CXCR4 mutations in disease pathogenesis.
  • Evaluation of Plerixafor's mechanism as a CXCR4 antagonist.
Keywords:
