    Summary

    Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) substance P levels did not differ between psychiatric patients and controls. Improper sample handling may explain previous findings of elevated substance P in mental health disorders.

    Background:

    • Substance P is a neuropeptide implicated in mood regulation.
    • Previous studies suggested elevated CSF substance P in psychiatric disorders, but findings were inconsistent.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate CSF substance P levels in unipolar and bipolar disorder patients across different mood states.
    • To examine the effect of lithium treatment on CSF substance P.
    • To identify potential artifactual causes for previously reported elevated levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured CSF substance P immunoreactivity in inpatient controls, acutely manic, euthymic, or depressed unmedicated unipolar and bipolar subjects.
