A Precision Medicine Tool for Measurement and Monitoring of Hemoglobin S in Sickle Cell Disease Patients Receiving Transfusion Therapy

Background:

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder.
Vaso-occlusive crisis is a common SCD complication.
Exchange transfusion is a standard treatment for severe SCD events.

Observation:

A 24-year-old Gabonese woman with SCD presented with a severe vaso-occlusive crisis.
Treatment involved an exchange transfusion.
Following treatment, she developed extensive bone marrow necrosis.

Findings:

Bone marrow necrosis is a rare and severe complication of sickle cell disease.
This complication necessitated repeated blood transfusions.
The case highlights an unusual manifestation of SCD.

Implications:

Understanding rare SCD complications is crucial for comprehensive patient care.
This case may inform clinical vigilance for bone marrow necrosis in SCD patients.
Further research into the pathophysiology of SCD-related bone marrow necrosis is warranted.
