Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate motor speed and rhythmicity in abstinent cannabis users.
  • To compare finger tapping performance between cannabis users and non-drug users.
  • To determine if cannabis abstinence is associated with lasting motor control deficits.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 10 healthy adult cannabis users and 10 matched controls.
  • Subjects performed maximal index finger tapping on a strain gauge for 5 seconds.
  • Analyzed tapping frequency and intertap interval variability.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in average intertap interval between groups.
  • Significantly greater coefficient of variation (variability) in the cannabis group (p=0.011).
  • Cannabis group showed slower initial tapping frequency.

Conclusions:

  • Rhythmicity of finger tapping is demonstrably abnormal in individuals with a history of cannabis use.
  • These motor control abnormalities appear to be long-lasting.
  • Adds to the evidence of persistent functional changes in abstinent cannabis users.
