Emerging translational research organizations (TROs) in China face funding, collaboration, and management challenges. Addressing these requires sustainable funding, broader multidisciplinary engagement, and adapted research management for successful medical innovation.
Area of Science:
- Translational Medicine
- Health Services Research
- Biomedical Research Management
Background:
- Translational medicine is a rapidly growing global field, with numerous translational research organizations (TROs) established worldwide.
- China has witnessed significant advancements in translational medicine, yet its emerging TROs encounter substantial operational and strategic challenges.
- This study investigates the specific hurdles faced by nascent TROs within the Chinese healthcare and research landscape.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore and identify the key challenges confronting emerging translational research organizations (TROs) in China.
- To provide insights into the structural, operational, and strategic barriers hindering the progress of translational research in China.
Main Methods:
- A qualitative research methodology was employed, utilizing a multiple case study design.
- Data collection was conducted between May and August 2012, focusing on eight identified TROs in China.
- The approach facilitated an in-depth examination of the contextual factors influencing TROs' operations and development.
Main Results:
- Four primary themes emerged: objectives/funding, partners/teams, management, and achievements.
- TROs primarily focused on translating discoveries to clinical applications and training researchers, often initiated by universities/hospitals and grant-funded.
- Limited multidisciplinary collaboration was observed, with a lack of engagement from social sciences, education, or community sectors, and management structures often failed to align with translational research principles.
Conclusions:
- Key challenges for Chinese TROs include securing sustainable funding, enhancing multidisciplinary cooperation, and developing specialized translational researchers.
- Adapting traditional research management paradigms to the unique needs of translational research is crucial for organizational effectiveness.
- Recommendations emphasize increased interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative educational programs for researchers, and reforms in research management and funding strategies.

Translation
Translation is the process of synthesizing proteins from the genetic information carried by messenger RNA (mRNA). Following transcription, it constitutes the final step in the expression of genes. This process is carried out by ribosomes, complexes of protein and specialized RNA molecules. Ribosomes, transfer RNA (tRNA), and other proteins produce a chain of amino acids—the polypeptide—as the end product of translation.
