Summary

Cardiac dysfunction is detectable in children with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), independent of metabolic issues. Early detection of heart abnormalities in pediatric NAFLD is crucial for intervention.

  • Cardiac function abnormalities in pediatric NAFLD are not well-established.
  • This study investigates cardiac function in children with NAFLD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To detect cardiac abnormalities and dysfunction in a pediatric population with NAFLD.
  • To explore the relationship between liver disease severity and cardiac parameters in children.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated 50 treatment-naive children with biopsy-proven NAFLD.
  • Collected anthropometric, laboratory, cardiovascular fitness, and 24-hour blood pressure data.
  • Utilized Doppler echocardiography to assess cardiac function and geometry.

  • Significant prevalence of cardiac abnormalities: 35% left ventricular hypertrophy, 14% concentric remodeling, 16% left atrial dilatation.

  • Left ventricular mass positively correlated with NAFLD activity score (NAS) after adjusting for confounders.

Conclusions:

  • Cardiac dysfunction is detectable early in pediatric NAFLD patients.
  • These cardiac changes appear linked to liver damage rather than metabolic or cardiovascular alterations.
  • A potential direct relationship between liver and heart steatosis may exist in childhood.
