Summary

This evidence mapping review shows recent randomized controlled trials on occupational therapy for older adults. Promising areas for future research include prevention strategies for stroke, falls, and dementia.

Background:

Previous systematic reviews on occupational therapy for the elderly concluded in 2003.
Recent evidence on occupational therapy efficacy for older adults requires synthesis.

Purpose of the Study:

To map recent evidence (2004-2012) on the efficacy of occupational therapy for older persons.
To identify promising areas for future research in geriatric occupational therapy.

Main Methods:

Systematic search of Cochrane and Medline databases for randomized controlled trials.
Inclusion of studies on occupational therapy interventions for individuals aged 65 and older.
Data extraction and quality analysis using PRISMA criteria by two independent raters.

Main Results:

Analysis of 48 randomized controlled trials published between 2004 and 2012.
Studies covered stroke (12), falls and mobility (15), dementia (7), prevention (4), and other conditions (10).
Frequent lack of reporting on adverse events, costs, and long-term outcomes.

Conclusions:

Occupational therapy shows promise in primary and secondary prevention for stroke, falls, and mobility issues.
Tertiary prevention for dementia is another key area for future research.
Future trials should adhere to reporting guidelines from the equator network for improved quality and transparency.
