Summary

Gleason score 7 or higher, positive surgical margins, and advanced pathological stage pT3 are key predictors of biochemical recurrence after prostatectomy. These factors help identify patients at higher risk for cancer regrowth post-surgery.

Background:

  • Radical prostatectomy (RP) is a primary treatment for localized prostate cancer.
  • Identifying prognostic factors for biochemical recurrence (BR) after RP is crucial for patient management.
  • Biochemical recurrence, defined by rising PSA levels post-surgery, often indicates residual or recurrent disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine independent prognostic factors for biochemical recurrence (BR) following radical prostatectomy (RP).
  • To enhance risk stratification for patients undergoing prostate cancer treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 693 patients treated with RP between 1996-2007.
  • Inclusion criteria: clinically localized prostate cancer, pN0-pNx stage, and minimum 12 months follow-up.
  • Statistical analysis included univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models to identify predictors of BR.
