Most colorectal cancer (CRC) control programs use evidence-based interventions (EBIs), but the most impactful ones for CRC screening are less common. Further research is needed to optimize EBI implementation for better population health outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Cancer Prevention
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is crucial for adults aged 50-75, but screening rates remain low, particularly among uninsured populations.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched the Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP) in 2009 to improve CRC screening rates.
- CRCCP funds 29 grantees to screen uninsured individuals and promote CRC screening at a population level.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the utilization of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) by CRCCP grantees.
- To assess which EBIs are being implemented to promote colorectal cancer screening.
Main Methods:
- A web-based survey was administered in 2011 to CRCCP grantees.
- The survey collected data on the use of CRC screening EBIs and identified implementation partners.
- Data analysis was conducted in 2012.
Main Results:
- Twenty-eight (97%) grantees responded to the survey.
- Small media interventions were most commonly used (96%), followed by client reminders (75%).
- Provider-oriented EBIs, such as provider reminders (32%) and provider assessment and feedback (50%), were less frequently implemented and perceived as more challenging.
Conclusions:
- While most grantees implement EBIs for CRC screening promotion, the adoption of high-impact interventions is limited in the early years of the CRCCP.
- Provider-oriented EBIs, potentially crucial for increasing screening, require further attention and support for successful implementation.

Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.
