Summary

Estradiol benzoate (EB) improved pregnancy per AI (P/AI) in beef cattle resynchronization protocols compared to GnRH. EB administration on day 22 after timed artificial insemination (TAI) did not impact established pregnancies, enhancing resynchronization success.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of estradiol benzoate (EB) versus GnRH for inducing follicular wave emergence in beef cattle RESYNCH protocols.
  • To evaluate the impact of EB administration on pregnancy per AI (P/AI) after RESYNCH.
  • To assess pregnancy loss between 30 and 60 days post-RESYNCH and compare it to natural mating (NM).

Main Methods:

  • Experiment 1: 475 Nelore heifers were resynchronized 22 days post-TAI using EB or GnRH, followed by a progestin-based protocol and TAI. Pregnancy rates and P/AI were compared.
  • Experiment 2: 664 zebu females were assigned to RESYNCH (using EB) or NM groups 22 days post-TAI to evaluate pregnancy loss and P/AI.

Main Results:

  • In Experiment 1, EB treatment resulted in significantly higher P/AI (49.3%) after RESYNCH compared to GnRH (37.2%).
  • Initial pregnancy rates after the first TAI were similar between EB and GnRH groups.

Conclusions:

  • Estradiol benzoate (EB) is more effective than GnRH for improving P/AI in beef cattle RESYNCH protocols when administered 22 days after the first TAI.
  • The EB-based RESYNCH protocol enhances conception rates without negatively affecting established pregnancies.
  • RESYNCH protocols offer a viable strategy to improve reproductive efficiency in beef cattle operations.
