  • Counseling aims to facilitate reflection and joint decision-making regarding HIV testing.
  • This study addresses the gap in counseling practices for HIV rapid testing among pregnant women.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Determine the proportion of women receiving counseling before HIV rapid testing.
  • Identify factors associated with the lack of counseling for HIV rapid testing.
  • Assess adherence to recommended HIV testing protocols in high-risk pregnancy settings.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study conducted in five "Baby-Friendly Hospitals" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • 955 rooming-in parturients undergoing HIV rapid testing were included (September-December 2006).
  • Data collected via semi-standardized questionnaires, laboratory, and health archives; binomial regression used for analysis.

Main Results:

  • Only 26.9% of parturients undergoing HIV rapid testing received counseling.
  • Lower maternal education (below 8 years) was associated with increased non-counseling (PR=1.36).
  • Fewer prenatal visits (0-3) and hospitals with low testing rates (<50%) were linked to non-counseling.

Conclusions:

  • Socially underprivileged women were disproportionately affected by the lack of counseling.
  • Low numbers of prenatal visits were a protective factor against non-counseling.
  • HIV rapid testing is often performed imperatively, without explicit consent, indicating a failure in ethical practice.
