    Area of Science:

    • Biomechanics
    • Sports Science
    • Kinesiology

    Background:

    • Static and dynamic balance are crucial for golf performance.
    • Previous research has not fully explored dynamic postural control throughout the golf swing across different skill levels.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate dynamic postural control, specifically center of mass (COM) motion, during various phases of the golf swing.
    • To compare COM motion during the swing in golfers of novice, intermediate, and advanced skill levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Eighteen golfers were categorized into novice, intermediate, and advanced skill groups based on handicap.
    • A 5-camera motion analysis system captured kinematic data of golfers hitting tee shots with a driver.
    • Center of mass (COM) displacement and trajectory linearity were analyzed during the swing phases.

    Main Results:

    • Advanced golfers demonstrated significantly lower COM displacement at maximum arm speed compared to intermediate and novice golfers.
    • Advanced players exhibited greater COM linearity during the early downswing phase.
    • These kinematic differences in COM control persisted after normalization for distance and time.

    Conclusions:

    • Advanced golfers possess enhanced dynamic postural control during the golf swing, characterized by reduced COM displacement and a more linear COM path.
    • This improved control may contribute to greater efficiency of COM motion and enhanced shot performance.
    • Future research should examine these dynamic postural control strategies in relation to ball launch conditions.
