    Summary

Delayed dural tears (incidental durotomy) can occur after lumbar spine surgery. This report details diagnosis and treatment options for this rare complication.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurosurgery
    • Orthopedic Surgery

    Background:

    • Incidental durotomy is a rare complication of posterior lumbar spine decompression surgery.
    • Early diagnosis and management are crucial for optimal patient outcomes.

    Observation:

    • Two case reports detail patients presenting with delayed symptoms of incidental durotomy.
    • Symptoms included headache, nausea, and radicular pain, appearing days to weeks post-surgery.

    Findings:

    • Diagnostic imaging, including MRI and CT myelography, revealed cerebrospinal fluid leakage.
    • Delayed presentation can mimic other postoperative complications, complicating diagnosis.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the importance of considering incidental durotomy in the differential diagnosis of delayed postoperative symptoms.
