Photoreceptors and Visual Pathways01:22

Photoreceptors and Visual Pathways

8.5K
At the molecular level, visual signals trigger transformations in photopigment molecules, resulting in changes in the photoreceptor cell's membrane potential. The photon's energy level is denoted by its wavelength, with each specific wavelength of visible light associated with a distinct color. The spectral range of visible light, classified as electromagnetic radiation, spans from 380 to 720 nm. Electromagnetic radiation wavelengths exceeding 720 nm fall under the infrared category,...

Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

736
Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Cognitive Development During Adulthood01:30

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

1.4K
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment01:28

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

1.7K
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Visual Agnosia01:12

Visual Agnosia

2.0K
Visual agnosia is a condition characterized by the inability to recognize visually presented objects despite having normal vision. For instance, a person with visual agnosia can describe the shape and color of an object but cannot identify or name it. This impairment does not affect their visual field, acuity, color vision, brightness discrimination, language, or memory. An example of this condition in a social setting is someone at a dinner party asking for "that silver thing with a round...

Glaucoma: Overview01:25

Glaucoma: Overview

1.7K
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Summary

Evidence on reading aids for low vision is limited. Some electronic devices may improve reading speed compared to optical magnifiers, but more research is needed on effectiveness and long-term use.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Rehabilitation Science
  • Human-Computer Interaction

Background:

  • Low vision significantly impacts daily living, with reading being a crucial task.
  • Low-vision rehabilitation utilizes optical and electronic devices to aid individuals with residual vision.
  • The effectiveness of various reading aids requires systematic evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effects of different reading aids for adults diagnosed with low vision.
  • To synthesize evidence from randomized and quasi-randomized trials comparing reading aids.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive literature search across multiple databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, etc.) up to January 2013.
  • Inclusion of randomized and quasi-randomized trials comparing any reading aid in individuals aged 16+ with low vision.
  • Independent data extraction and quality assessment by at least two authors.

Main Results:

  • Nine small cross-over-like studies and one parallel-arm study were included.
  • Moderate-to-low quality evidence suggests higher reading speed with certain electronic devices compared to optical magnifiers.
  • Optical devices showed better performance than head-mounted electronic devices; evidence for other comparisons was low-quality or inconclusive.

Conclusions:

  • Insufficient evidence exists regarding the comparative effectiveness of various low-vision aids for reading.
  • Further high-quality research is needed to identify patient characteristics predicting device performance and assess long-term usability.
  • Study designs should address potential biases in sequential device testing.
