Area of Science:

  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Patient Experience
  • Quality Improvement

Background:

  • Patient satisfaction is crucial for healthcare quality and performance metrics.
  • Understanding the attending surgeon can influence patient perception of care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of a surgeon biosketch card intervention on patient satisfaction.
  • To improve patient understanding of their orthopaedic trauma surgeon and overall care quality.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective randomized quality improvement initiative at a Level 1 academic trauma center.
  • Intervention group received a biosketch card with surgeon details; control group did not.
  • Patient satisfaction surveys assessed overall quality of care delivered by the attending surgeon.

Main Results:

  • 74% of patients receiving a biosketch card reported excellent care quality versus 52% in the control group (P=0.05).
  • Demographic and clinical factors did not significantly influence satisfaction outcomes.
  • A statistically significant improvement in patient satisfaction was observed in the intervention group.

Conclusions:

  • A simple biosketch card intervention can significantly improve patient satisfaction with orthopaedic trauma care.
  • Enhancing patient understanding of their surgeon positively impacts their perception of care quality.
  • This intervention offers a practical approach to improving patient experience in trauma surgery settings.
