    Summary

    Alclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, showed comparable efficacy to previous treatments for ankylosing spondylitis in an open trial. While initial symptom increase was noted, long-term use suggests potential as an alternative therapy.

    Background:

    • Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the spine.
    • Effective long-term management strategies for ankylosing spondylitis are continuously sought.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of alclofenac in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
    • To compare alclofenac's effectiveness against patients' previous therapies.

    Main Methods:

    • An open-label trial involving 18 patients with definite ankylosing spondylitis.
    • Patients received 3 to 4 g of alclofenac daily for up to 8 months.
    • Efficacy was assessed by comparing to previous treatment regimens.

    Main Results:

    • Therapeutic efficacy was greater than or equivalent to previous therapy in 10 of 18 patients after 1 month.
    • Eight patients continued treatment with alclofenac.
