    Human alpha interferon (IFN) treatment for multiple sclerosis activated immune cells and increased antibody responses to contaminants. Some patients developed immune complex disease symptoms, indicating significant immune system effects.

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
    • Interferons are cytokines with immunomodulatory properties, investigated for MS treatment.
    • Previous studies suggested potential benefits of interferon therapy in MS.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and immunological effects of human alpha interferon (IFN) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
    • To monitor specific immune system functions during IFN treatment.
    • To identify potential adverse immune-related events associated with IFN therapy.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective, placebo-controlled study design.
