Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

5.2K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Chondrosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, can occur in the calcaneum (heel bone). Surgical excision is the primary treatment, as chemotherapy and radiation are often ineffective for these cartilaginous tumors.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Bone Tumors
  • Skeletal Malignancies

Background:

  • Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant cartilaginous bone tumor.
  • Common sites include the pelvis, scapula, proximal femur, and shoulder girdle.
  • Calcaneal chondrosarcoma represents a rare subset, accounting for 0.5-2.97% of all cases.

Observation:

  • A case of chondrosarcoma in the calcaneum of a 56-year-old woman is presented.
  • This highlights the occurrence of this rare tumor in an unusual location.
  • The patient's presentation underscores the diagnostic challenge of calcaneal lesions.

Findings:

  • Calcaneal chondrosarcoma is an exceptionally rare presentation of this bone malignancy.
  • Wide surgical excision is the standard treatment modality.
  • Chemotherapy and radiation therapy demonstrate limited efficacy in managing most chondrosarcomas.

Implications:

  • This case emphasizes the importance of considering rare differentials for calcaneal masses.
  • Effective management relies on prompt surgical intervention.
  • Further research may explore novel therapeutic strategies for recalcitrant chondrosarcomas.
