- Coordination Chemistry
- Supramolecular Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers are of interest for their diverse structures and potential applications.
- Silver(I) complexes with nitrogen-containing ligands can form intricate supramolecular architectures.
- Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are crucial for advanced photonic and optoelectronic devices.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize novel silver(I) complexes using imidazole-based (L(1)) and triazole-based (L(2)) ligands.
- To investigate the structural features and supramolecular assembly of these new silver(I) complexes.
- To evaluate the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the synthesized ligands and their corresponding silver(I) complexes.
Main Methods:
- Self-assembly of ligands L(1) and L(2) with silver(I) salts.
- Single-crystal X-ray diffraction for structural analysis.
- Z-scan technique to measure nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.
Main Results:
- Eight new silver(I) complexes were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized.
- Supramolecular architectures were formed through coordination bonds, Ag···π, Ag···F/O interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π···π stacking.
- Complex 7 exhibited a two-dimensional coordination polymer structure.
- Complexes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 demonstrated significant nonlinear absorption, outperforming the free ligands.
Conclusions:
- The study successfully synthesized novel silver(I) complexes with imidazole and triazole ligands.
- The diverse supramolecular structures are influenced by coordination, non-covalent interactions, and solvent molecules.
- The investigated silver(I) complexes show promising nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior, particularly in terms of nonlinear absorption.

Structural Isomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Structural isomerism of coordination compounds can be divided into two subcategories, the linkage isomers and coordination-sphere isomers.
Linkage isomers occur when the coordination compound contains a ligand that can bind to the transition metal center through two different atoms. For example, the CN− ligand can bind through the carbon atom or through the nitrogen atom. Similarly,...
Metal-Ligand Bonds
In these complexes, transition metals form coordinate covalent bonds, a kind of Lewis acid-base interaction in which both of the electrons in the bond are contributed by a donor (Lewis base) to an electron acceptor (Lewis acid). The Lewis acid in...
Stereoisomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula.
Transition metal complexes often exist as geometric isomers, in which the same atoms are connected through the same types of bonds but with differences in their orientation in space. Coordination complexes with two different ligands in the cis and trans positions from a ligand of interest form isomers. For example, the octahedral [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+ ion has two isomers (Figure 1) In the cis...
