Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Transportation Safety
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Driver drowsiness is a major safety concern, often addressed by in-car systems.
  • Postural control tests have shown sensitivity to fatigue in occupational drivers.
  • Feasibility of roadside postural control testing for drowsiness surveillance is unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of a force platform test for roadside drowsiness detection.
  • To assess postural control as a potential breathalyzer-like drowsiness test.
  • To correlate postural control with sleepiness scales and work/wake histories.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-one commercial drivers underwent a force platform test measuring postural control (center-of-pressure excursions).
  • Drivers completed the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS).
  • Wake up time, time on task, and time of testing were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Five drivers showed significantly poorer postural control (P=0.03).
  • These drivers had night shift schedules or long work hours.
  • Poorer postural control correlated with KSS scores in these drivers (r=-0.88, P=0.04).

Conclusions:

  • The force platform test identified drowsiness-related impairment in postural control.
  • The test successfully identified drivers with work/wake histories indicative of fatigue.
  • Further development may enable this method for roadside drowsiness surveillance.
