Chromosomal abnormalities are a significant cause of severe mental retardation in Iraqi patients. Structural autosomal abnormalities were the most common findings in this study.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Medical Genetics
- Human Genetics
Background:
- Mental retardation is a complex condition with various etiologies.
- Chromosomal abnormalities are recognized as a major contributing factor to intellectual disability.
- Understanding the prevalence and types of these abnormalities is crucial for diagnosis and management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the frequency of chromosomal abnormalities in Iraqi patients with severe mental retardation.
- To identify the specific types of chromosomal abnormalities most frequently associated with severe mental retardation.
- To compare these findings with existing international research.
Main Methods:
- Karyotyping was performed on 21 Iraqi patients diagnosed with severe mental retardation.
- Standard lymphocyte culture techniques were employed for chromosomal analysis.
Main Results:
- Chromosomal abnormalities were detected in 14 out of 21 patients (approximately 67%).
- Autosomal abnormalities were predominant, accounting for 13 cases, while only one case involved sex chromosomal abnormalities.
- Structural autosomal abnormalities were the most common type observed, with only two patients presenting with diagnosable syndromes.
Conclusions:
- Chromosomal abnormalities represent a significant cause of severe mental retardation.
- The frequency of chromosomal abnormalities appears to correlate with the severity of mental retardation.
- Chromosomal analysis is vital for accurate diagnosis, prognosis, genetic counseling, and rehabilitation planning for affected individuals.
