Insights
Active video games provide light to moderate physical activity for children with cystic fibrosis. Playing Wii Boxing offers light intensity exercise, while Wii Fit Free Jogging provides moderate intensity activity.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Exercise Physiology
- Rehabilitation Medicine
- Digital Health Interventions
Background:
- Active video games are utilized in pediatric hospitals as exercise modalities for children diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF).
- The specific exercise intensity levels achieved during gameplay in this vulnerable population remain largely unquantified.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the exercise intensity of active video games in children with cystic fibrosis.
- To compare the energy expenditure of playing Nintendo Wii™ Sports Boxing and Wii Fit Free Jogging between children with CF and healthy controls.
Main Methods:
- Thirty children with CF (mean age 12.3 years) and age/gender-matched controls participated.
- Oxygen consumption (V˙O2) and heart rate were measured using portable indirect calorimetry during gameplay.
- Metabolic equivalents (METs) were calculated to quantify exercise intensity.
Main Results:
- Nintendo Wii™ Sports Boxing elicited light-intensity physical activity (2.46 METs).
- Nintendo Wii Fit Free Jogging generated moderate-intensity physical activity (4.44 METs).
- No significant differences in energy expenditure were observed between the CF group and controls during active video game play.
Conclusions:
- Active video games represent a viable source of light to moderate intensity physical activity for pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis.
- These findings support the integration of exergaming into CF management strategies for improving physical activity levels.
Background:
Active video games are used in many hospitals as exercise tools for children with cystic fibrosis. However, the exercise intensity associated with playing these games has not been examined in this population.
Methods:
Children with cystic fibrosis [n=30, aged 12.3 (2.6) years, 17 boys, BMI 17.7 (2.8) kg/m(2)] were recruited from outpatient clinics in Dublin hospitals. Age and gender matched control children were recruited from local schools. Oxygen consumption, metabolic equivalents (METs) calculated from resting V˙O2, and heart rate were measured while playing Nintendo Wii™ (Nintendo Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) Sports Boxing and Nintendo Wii Fit Free Jogging using a portable indirect calorimeter (Oxycon Mobile).
Results:
Playing Wii Boxing resulted in light intensity activity (2.46METs) while playing Wii Fit Free Jogging resulted in moderate intensity physical activity (4.44METs). No significant difference was seen between groups in the energy cost of playing active video games.
Conclusion:
Active video games are a useful source of light to moderate intensity physical activity in children with cystic fibrosis.
