Area of Science:

  • Plasmonics
  • Nanophotonics
  • Integrated Optics

Background:

  • Efficient mode conversion is crucial for advancing nano-plasmonic integrated circuits.
  • Existing methods face challenges in achieving desired mode transformations and miniaturization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose and simulate a novel Sa0 mode converter (Sa0MC) for transforming Ss0 mode to Sa0 mode.
  • To enable the development of nano-plasmonic integrated circuits with sub-diffraction-limit mode sizes.

Main Methods:

  • Design of an insulator-metal-insulator-metal-insulator waveguide (IMIMI-W) with specific dimensions and materials.
  • Incorporation of vertical silver ridges (VSRs) and lateral silver mirrors (LSMs) for mode conversion.
  • Simulation of mode transformation from approximately 5.1 microm x 4.9 microm (Ss0) to approximately 1.0 microm x 0.5 microm (Sa0).

Main Results:

  • Achieved efficient conversion of Ss0 mode to Sa0 mode in the IMIMI-W.
  • Demonstrated a mode converting efficiency of approximately 5.0 dB via simulation.
  • Utilized 20 nm thick Au strips and silver ink for VSRs and LSMs, with low-loss polymer as cladding and insulator layers.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed Sa0MC offers a new pathway for creating highly integrated nano-plasmonic circuits.
  • The device facilitates mode sizes below the diffraction limit of light.
  • This work contributes to the advancement of sub-wavelength optical components and circuits.
