Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. Background:

The need for culturally sensitive personality assessments is growing.
Existing personality measures may not fully capture multicultural competencies.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Multicultural Personality Inventory (MPI).
To assess the psychometric properties of the MPI.
To determine if MPI factors predict criterion variables beyond the Big Five personality traits.

Main Methods:

Two studies involving university student samples (N=415 and N=576).
Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to establish the MPI's structure.
The MPI was administered alongside theoretically related instruments and criterion variables.

Main Results:

A 70-item, 7-factor model of the MPI was identified.
Confirmatory factor analysis supported the 7-factor structure (CFI=.954, RMSEA=.057).
MPI factors uniquely predicted criterion variables, accounting for variance beyond the Big Five traits.

Conclusions:

The Multicultural Personality Inventory (MPI) is a psychometrically sound measure.
The MPI offers valuable insights into multicultural personality dimensions.
Further validation research is recommended.
