Multiple myeloma patients exhibit an impaired oxidant/antioxidant balance, with lower thiol levels and higher oxidative stress index (OSI) and total oxidant status (TOS). Further research is recommended.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the oxidant/antioxidant balance in multiple myeloma patients.
  • To compare oxidative stress markers between multiple myeloma patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 40 multiple myeloma patients and 40 healthy controls.
  • Measured serum total thiol, oxidative stress index (OSI), total oxidant status (TOS), and total antioxidant status (TAS).
  • Quantified paraoxonase-1 and arylesterase enzyme activities using colorimetric methods.

Main Results:

  • Multiple myeloma patients showed significantly lower serum paraoxonase-1, arylesterase activities, and total thiol levels.
  • Patients exhibited significantly higher TOS and OSI levels compared to controls.
  • No significant difference in total antioxidant status (TAS) was observed between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest an impaired oxidative/antioxidant balance in multiple myeloma.
  • Further studies with larger cohorts are needed to explore the link between oxidative stress and multiple myeloma aetiopathogenesis.
