Pollination and Flower Structure02:40

Pollination and Flower Structure

63.9K
Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs.

Seed Structure and Early Development of the Sporophyte

27.7K
Seed structures are composed of a protective seed coat surrounding a plant embryo, and a food store for the developing embryo. The embryo contains the precursor tissues for leaves, stem, and roots. The endosperm and cotyledons—seed leaves—act as the food reserves for the growing embryo.

Summary

Pollen vigor, not just viability, is crucial for plant reproduction, especially under stress. This study shows stress impacts vigor before viability, highlighting the need for better assessment methods for stored pollen.

Area of Science:

  • Plant reproductive biology
  • Seed and pollen science
  • Stress physiology in plants

Background:

  • Pollen viability and vigor are critical for plant reproduction and crop yield.
  • Current methods for assessing pollen quality may not adequately capture stress-induced changes.
  • Understanding pollen response to environmental stress is essential for conservation and breeding programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To correlate pollen viability, assessed via fluorochromatic reaction (FCR) test, with pollen vigor.
  • To evaluate the impact of high humidity, high temperature, and storage stress on pollen vigor and viability.
  • To investigate these effects across diverse plant species: Nicotiana tabacum, Agave sp., Tradescantia virginiana, and Iris sp.

Main Methods:

  • Pollen viability was assessed using the fluorochromatic reaction (FCR) test.

  • Pollen vigor was determined by measuring the time for in vitro germination.
  • Pollen samples were subjected to controlled high humidity (>95% RH) and temperature (38 °C), as well as storage stress.
  • Main Results:

    • Both high humidity/temperature and storage stresses impacted pollen vigor before affecting pollen viability.
    • The timing of stress effects differed between vigor and viability.
    • Species-specific responses to stress may exist, warranting further investigation.

    Conclusions:

    • Pollen vigor is a more sensitive indicator of stress than pollen viability.
    • Current assessment methods may be inadequate for detecting stress-induced declines in pollen quality.
    • There is a critical need to consider pollen vigor, especially for stored pollen, and to develop improved assessment techniques.
