Summary

Intratendinous ruptures of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon are uncommon without rheumatoid arthritis. This case details a traumatic rupture in a patient without autoimmune disease affecting the ring finger.

Background:

  • Intratendinous ruptures of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon are infrequently observed.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is a common predisposing factor for tendon ruptures.

Observation:

  • A case report of a traumatic FDP tendon rupture is presented.
  • The patient had no prior history of autoimmune disease.

Findings:

  • The rupture occurred within the tendon substance (intratendinous).
  • The injury affected the flexor digitorum profundus tendon of the ring finger.
  • The mechanism of injury was traumatic, occurring in the mid-palm region.

Implications:

  • This case highlights that traumatic FDP tendon ruptures can occur in individuals without autoimmune conditions.
  • It expands the differential diagnosis for mid-palm injuries involving the flexor tendons.
  • Further investigation into non-rheumatoid arthritis-related FDP tendon injuries may be warranted.
